Class Descriptions
The following information is meant for people who want to know how our class modules are constructed and the sort of classes that can be requested. If you want descriptions of specific classes that are already available, go to Register.Structure - Classes are organized based on the number of sessions which can vary anywhere from 1 to 10 or more classes, skill levels, which can vary from total beginner to advanced, and theme, which can include things such as general introduction to an instrument to specialty themes like birthday band or holiday band. Certain classes, such as basic introductory classes, are more frequently offered without special request because they are commonly requested.
Expectations - Each class is designed to target a certain type of student but each student can have their own goals or expectations. For example, an introductory class of 3 to 5 sessions could be appropriate for a young person wanting to learn the basics of an instrument before signing up for band or orchestra in school as well as an adult who would like to simply try playing an instrument to see if they would enjoy playing it. This is why we ask people to briefly describe their goals or expectations for a class to help us focus on what each student wants.
Skill level - Skill levels vary considerably but we try to work with a very basic system. Get Started is meant for anyone who is just beginning with an instrument and can include a variety of backgrounds. Some people will have no musical background at all, some will have some background from having learned to play a different instrument and some will be people who played an instrument years ago but has forgotten many of the basics. If the level is too simple, you pay for the lesson or lessons you actually attended and can apply the remainder to another class. Learn Technique is for students who are familiar with the instrument and are ready to tackle the development of technique. Technique involves any of a number of different skills such as playing scales and chords, range, tone, dynamics, etc. Not all techniques will be included in each class so a student can pick the particular techniques to focus on. Become A Pro is for people who want to achieve levels of technical skill as well as performance techniques and other skills which only a professional musician would need to develop. Since these skills can vary considerably, classes will focus on learning how to develop specific types of skills.
Time and Date - If there is no time and dates assigned for a class, fill out the request form and submit it to us. This form helps us know when there are enough people interested in a specific class based on the criteria such as instrument, skill level, preferred class time and dates and expectations. As soon as we have enough interest in a class that we are not already offering, we assign a class time and notify all the people who have expressed an interest. Once a class has been assigned a time and dates, people can begin to register. Since people new to the site can register for any class that is currently available, the possibility exists that the maximum number of students attempting to register for a class can be exceeded. If that happens, additional sections of the same class may be added.
Location - Classes are not restricted to the studio at Lafayette Music's store and people can request other locations. For example, a class could include a family wanting to do a Birthday Band, in which case the lessons could take place at someone's house. Other possibilities might include churches, recreation centers or private studios. Prices for lessons can vary depending on location. If you want a special location, include that information in the comments on a class request.
Class Requests
If you do not see a class that fits your needs on the Registration page, you should submit a request form at the bottom of this page. The following information is meant to help you request the type of class you want.
Skill Level
Get Started is always the same for any instrument so there is no qualification on that level.
Learn Technique covers various techniques. If there is a particular skill you are interested in, mention that in the comments.
Become A Pro really needs some comment on the skill level involved and what specifics the student wants to work on. Classes will be smaller and rates will vary depending on the instructor.
Preferences
Indicate the times and days you would prefer. Preferences are considered in determining which day and time to offer a course. When there are enough requests to form a class, everyone who has submitted a request will be notified that a class is available even though the preferred day and time may not exactly match each person's request. When someone signs up for a class, their name is removed from the request file. If you preferences were not met and you were unable to sign
up for a class that was formed, we keep your name on file in attempting to form another class.
It is important that every student have a clear idea of what they expect from the class even if it is simply to learn the basics for an absolute beginner. At intermediate and advanced levels, this issue may be more important. The preparation for an audition can be quite different than simply wanting to become familiar with the best exercises to develop a particular skill even though both might fall in an intermediate or advanced level.
Specialty Classes
Specialty Classes are classes that are organized for a specific objective and may cross lines of skill levels and instrumentation that would not otherwise apply. For example:
Birthday Band is designed to help a group of friends or family playing different instruments learn an arrangement of Happy Birthday and one or more pop songs to play for someone's birthday. This class might include total beginners and advanced players with a common objective of learning to play something together.
Open House is a one class session for a specific type of instrument that covers basics of things like proper breathing, technique and maintenance for players at any level. Each class is customized for the people who attend. For more information, click here.
